November 12, 2006 The Bohol Standard

For the past few days, Boholanos experienced another series of intermittent power outages that disrupted the natural flow of activities. Commonly called as brownouts, these disruptions have been coming at a frequency that is making people uncomfortable at the very least.

Those involved in the power distribution always have a way of explaining the cause for these brownouts. Needless to say, the causes are always beyond their control and therefore should not be blamed on them.

There are however a lot of questions that Boholano consumers are asking and for which all the bright boys in the power sector have not sufficiently answered.

For instance, why do power interruptions occur in Bohol whenever the weather deteriorates? There are many explanations and technical jargons but the question is why, in spite of the presence of all the bright boys, they still have not done enough to solve this.

The point is that why are other provinces spared from the same fate? Again, there will always be explanations but the fact remains that Bohol is helpless whenever there are storms and heavy rains.

Another question that people are asking is why Boholanos are paying much more than the rest of the power consumers in the Visayas. Again, there will always be graphs and tables to show why the power distributors arrive at their respective computations. There is always proof but it does not address the question.

So what makes Bohol different? From what we have heard from our public officials, they are doing everything to make life easier for Boholanos. They even claim that they have succeeded in a lot of things and accomplished much.

Each time Boholanos receive their bills however, they remember the question. Why are the experts unable to solve the riddle? If there are limitations and problems, what are they doing about them?

Bohol is trying to project itself as a province of the future. There are even very grandiose plans that excite a lot of people. And yet, all of these plans are mere illusions for as long as the power situation does not improve.

No investor in his right mind will invest in a province where the power cost is much higher. As if that is not enough, the power supply is also unstable when you need it most.

That in itself summarizes the fate that Bohol is facing. There should be no more talk of progress unless these problems are dealt with. Granting that no one is to blame for these, the fact is that we are – for all intents and purposes – powerless.

John 3:16-18 ESV
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son (Jesus Christ), that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.
