Editorial: Distorted priorities
November 5, 2006 The Bohol Standard

The results of a recent survey conducted by the Social Weather Stations (SWS) revealed how this country has gone from bad to worse. The SWS survey said 16.9 percent of 17.4 million households experienced hunger at least once in the third quarter of the year.

This is indeed is a very alarming revelation, to put it mildly. Hunger in a country where there is so much land to till is undisputedly shameful. How a country teeming with vast resources has gone so low as to be incapable to feed its people.

Of course, the revelation did not sit well with those who feed on the carcass of the people. Administration allies immediately took a swipe at the SWS, as if discrediting the survey firm would alleviate the hunger of its people.

Not to be outdone, Malacanang immediately took the occasion to show off its concern but launching a press release barrage. How sad that instead of being taken aback by the absurdity of it all, the administration prefers to make counter-claims.

That the government is doing something about hunger, there should be no question about it. It is the government’s responsibility to do so given the huge budget that it has at its disposal.

As to whether its efforts are enough, the statistics show it does not. No amount of press statements, regardless of who issues them, can make the hungry deny the churning in their stomachs.

It is true that this is not time for finger-pointing. To blame the government for the hunger stalking the land would not do any good at this point. And yet, it is also incumbent for the government to redirect its efforts and resolve to work overtime because obviously its efforts are not enough.

Granting that the concerned agencies are working hard to solve the problem, is it already enough reason to channel precious resources elsewhere? Does this mean that the government can already fold its arms when confronted by the hungry?

What makes it obscene is that while the ranks of the hungry and the impoverished are growing by the day, the government is more preoccupied with the business of changing the charter. As though a new charter will bring food to the stomachs of its people.

If there is anything that can be said about this whole episode, it is the fact that this administration has got its priorities all wrong. While the charter no doubt needs to be changed, it is not a life-and-death situation like empty stomachs.

Granting that this administration can draft a perfect constitution (which it cannot), this would not mean anything to people who have nothing to eat.

John 3:16-18 ESV
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son (Jesus Christ), that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.
