Chatto keynotes C.U.P. assembly
Published December 9, 2001 by Bohol Sunday Post - FIRST District Congressman Edgar Chatto was the Keynote Speaker of the recently concluded 22nd Annual General Assembly of the Cooperative Union of the Philippines (CUP) .
In his keynote speech, Chatto stressed on the vital role of cooperativism, in its many facets, in curbing mass poverty and deprivation and its role in improving the quality of life of all. Chatto also pointed out the many challenges that we are facing today-locally and globally, and hinted at how the cooperatives, thru a further consolidation of forces could help address such challenges.
The first district solon, a lawyer and economist by profession, moreso tackled on the possibility of revolutionizing our nation's economy thru the cooperative sector.
Chatto said, "if our cooperatives are given priority even just in the bidding of government office supplies, that would mean more income for many, most of whom are truly needy."
"Imagine the profits, or in cooperative parlance, the surplus or patronage refund, that can be shared among members, if such a practice is institutionalized in our nation's system." Chatto added.
The CUP's annual congress bannered the theme, "Improving the quality of Life thru Unionism." Other speakers during the two-day affair were: Tagbilaran City Mayor Jose Torralba, Hon. Carlito Fernandez, the regional Director of the Cooperative Development Authority, Felix Borja, CUP Secretary-General, and Dr. Teresita Coloma, Chairperson of the KOOPNET Philippines who was the Workshop Director.
Part of the output of the workshop is the three-year Strategic Plan to which Chatto gave his strong support.
