ATIO HAZING CASE:
MILLENNIAL SOLON CALLS ON DFA TO INVOKE EXTRADITION TREATY WITH U.S.A.
House Committees on Foreign Affairs and Justice Member AANGAT Tayo Party-list Congressman Harlin Neil Abayon, III supports the “Revised Anti-Hazing Bill†forwarded by the Justice Panel to the plenary. The 29-year-old lawmaker seeks justice for 22-year-old hazing victim Horacio “Atio†Castillo, III and wants all resources of the government be spent in bringing justice to Atio and his family.
The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) must invoke the extradition treaty between the Philippines and the United States so that any suspects in the killing of Horacio “Atio†Castillo, III who fled to the US will face justice here in the Philippines.
US Ambassador Sung Kim should work with the DFA and Department of Justice (DOJ) on the arrest of the suspects. As a friend of the Philippines, the US ought to help us seek justice for Atio.
Ambassador Kim can function as the facilitator of the DFA and DOJ with the US State Department and US Justice Department.
The Bureau of Immigration confirmed that primary suspect Ralph Trangia y Cabales left for Taiwan last September 19. Taiwan Economic Cultural office (TECO) said that Trangia then took a flight to Chicago.
Trangia and at least 16 other Aegis Juris Fraternity members are among those charged with murder, violation of the anti-hazing law (RA 8049), and robbery in connection with Atio’s hazing death.
Trangia is clearly now a fugitive from justice. I appeal to the DFA to urge the US government to undertake wide-ranging, inter-state manhunt operations against Trangia. He should face the charges here in the Philippines. We should not let him hide for too long.
