Filipina Hero: Alma Bella Guiao

By Gloria Jane Baylon

Alma Bella Guiao, a Filipino worker in Syria described by the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) as a heroine and a patriot, is one of nine repatriates expected to arrive here on Thursday.

At various times since the civil war in Syria started, Guiao “successfully” brought to the Philippine embassy in Damascus 25 beleaguered compatriots out of harm’s way from their tension-filled work places in Homs and Latakia, north of the capital.

DFA did not indicate how Guiao accomplished her rescue mission, but Secretary Albert del Rosario cited her for “her unyielding courage and perseverance…steadfast dedication” in getting the domestic helpers ”out of harm’s way.”

”She is a role model for the Filipino community in Syria…an example of a Filipino who is truly patriotic and dedicated," del Rosario said.

“We commend Ms. Guiao for her unyielding courage and perseverance in saving fellow OFWs caught in the conflict-stricken governorate of Homs. She is a role model for the Filipino community in Syria because of her steadfast dedication in getting Filipino household service workers out of harm’s way. She is an example of a Filipino who is truly patriotic and dedicated to the service of her fellow Filipinos."
