Canadians will need a visa to enter the United Arab Emirates (UAE) starting January 2, the UAE embassy in Ottawa announced Monday.
The announcement comes as the two countries have been at odds over landing rights in Canada for UAE-based carriers, the closure of a UAE military base to Canadian use, and a UAE threat to ban key services for Canada-based Research In Motion's (RIM) BlackBerry smartphones.
Requirements for the visas were not immediately announced.
"All sovereign states have the right to decide the entry requirements for visitors to their countries," Foreign Minister Lawrence Cannon's spokesman Jacques Labrie told AFP by email. - Agence France Presse
