Worldwide Smartphone Sales Almost Doubled
« on: November 12, 2010, 05:23:50 AM »
Worldwide smartphone sales almost doubled in the third quarter this year, in part driven by strong demands for Apple's iPhone and handsets running on Google's Android mobile operating system, research firm Gartner said on Wednesday.

A new report from Gartner showed that global smartphone sales surged to a record of 81 million units in the quarter, accounting for 19.3 percent of overall mobile phone sales and representing an increase of 96 percent from the same period a year ago.

"This quarter saw Apple and Android drive record smartphone sales," Carolina Milanesi, research vice president at Gartner, said in a statement.

Apple's share of the smartphone market surpassed BlackBarry maker Research In Motion (RIM) in North America to put it second behind Android, while sales of Android phones also grew rapidly, making Android the No. 2 mobile operating system worldwide after Symbian which runs on many of Nokia's handsets.

Nokia, Samsung and LG remained the world's top three mobile device manufacturers but with reduced market share. Apple rose into the top five for the first time in the quarter, surpassing RIM for fourth place.

Overall, worldwide mobile phone sales totaled 417 million units in the third quarter, up 35 percent from the year-ago period, according to Gartner.

"This is the third consecutive double-digit increase in sales year-on-year, indicating that consumer demand is healthy," Milanesi said.

Gartner analysts said they now expect overall mobile phone sales worldwide to grow over 30 percent in 2010 from the previous year. (PNA/Xinhua)
