Globe Telecom Inc. started offering on Tuesday its brand of service known in the industry as long term evolution (LTE), a more advanced form of broadband technology but significantly faster.
Globe announced the start of the service via the social networking site Twitter and came in the wake by an announcement from Apple Inc. chief executive officer Tim Cook that 36 more carriers, those in the Philippines included, would receive software updates this week enabling LTE-enabled gadgets to enjoy this superior form of broadband technology.
Apple’s iPhone 5, launched in the Philippines by both Globe and rival Smart Communications in mid-December last year, is an LTE-enable mobile phone.
Globe announced its LTE services in September last year, according to published reports, while Smart started offering the service for free till the end of April this year.
Smart Communication officials said the LTE service is available in parts of Metro Manila and other key cities around the country.
Published reports indicate only 24 telcos from around the world offer LTE service prior to the activation of 36 more in countries such as the Philippines. - PNA
