If you see Jennifer Lopez, Beyonce, Mariah Carey, Celine Dion or Angelina Jolie, to name a few, all so made up and beautiful for the red carpet… more often than not credit goes to Mally Roncal, the in-demand 36 year old Filipina makeup artist who has been toning, painting and glossing celebrity faces for major events, magazine covers and appearances.
A favorite of top fashion magazines for cover and photo shoots, Mally has also guested as a beauty expert on television shows like Oprah, Access Hollywood and The Today Show. But mostly, Mally says she is on some private jet flying with a celebrity as their official make-up artist. But this charming Filipina is not complaining. "There is nothing I love more than sharing my secrets and tricks with women, celebrity or not, so they can feel their best," Mally says in the application instructions that come with her product called Shimmer, Shape and Glow. "Beauty is about projecting positive energy. Everyone is beautiful inside and out. Love yourself."
Mally whose parents are both doctors initially thought she will end up in medicine. "Every Filipino is a doctor or nurse," smilingly says Mally. "I was in Pre-med to study and be a dermatologist, because I ultimately wanted to start my own line of makeup I just thought that it made the most sense. Halfway through I said. 'This is not fun. All I wanna do is do the makeup.' So I switched to Fashion Design working for designers like stylists Mathu and Zaldy, and celebrity hair stylist Danilo. I did that for two years. But realizing it was not my passion; I went head first into the deep end into becoming a makeup artist.
"I never had formal training. I always knew how to do it. I never went to school. I just kept watching and learning. I just started workingâ€â€fashion shoots, models, then somehow, celebrities. I was always asked to be the spokesperson for Sephora, Revlon, MAC, Almay and Maybelline and so one day I thought, instead of selling other people's stuff. I should be selling my own stuff!
Now this Filipino offers her own beauty line simply called Mally which has been a favorite among celebrities. And has been featured in magazines namely Glamour, Cosmo, In-Style, Self, Harper's Bazaar, People, Alllure, US Weekly and Entertainment Weekly. Her monthly column " Trend Spotting" for Seventeen is a staple in the beauty industry. But, even more wonderful is that this full bred Filipina who talks about adobo and pansit with Beyonce is very patriotic.
"I was born in Middletown, N.Y., but I always say that if you walk through the door of our home, it is like being in Manila kasi it smells like patis. We have the big fork and spoon and everything else that shows it's a Filipino-owned house.
"Even my husband, Phil, who's from South Carolina, is now Filipino too. He is now COO of Mally Beauty. We talk and eat Filipino all the time.
"It just makes me so sad when I meet an Asian girl who asks me, "How do I make my eyes look rounder?" And I'm like, "Don't do it!" I believe everyone is beautiful and all of our characteristics really lend to celebrating what our nationality is and we should work with that. I've always tried to find fun new ways to enhance my Asian look rather than try to mask it. That is why I named one of my lipsticks Maganda!
