Wikipedia Founder Jimmy Wales has indicated that he will try to talk with China about their decision to block his user-updated online encyclopedia. Although Wikipedia’s content is currently blocked in China, Chinese search engine Baidu has been offering some of the website’s content…claiming it as its own copyrighted material.
Wales said he would travel to China in September to meet with high-level officials to address the issue of blockage. But he said he refuses to censor his site’s content to gain official approval the way Google and Yahoo have done.
Regarding the decision to censor its site for Chinese users, Google says it can play a more useful role in China by participating than by boycotting it, despite the compromises involved. In an official statement Google said that “While removing search results is inconsistent with Google’s mission, providing no information (or a heavily degraded user experience that amounts to no information) is more inconsistent with our mission.â€
With an estimated 110 million web surfers, China’s internet community is second only to the U.S.
The country’s Internet control system reportedly employs 30,000-50-000 people. According to a 2002 Harvard University report, China’s government blocked at least 19,000 sites during a six month period and may have blocked as man as 50,000 Internet sites.
It looks like Jimmy Wales may be fighting a losing battle.
