At least 9 killed in Kazakhstan building collapse
ASTANA, Jan. 2 (PNA/Xinhua) -- At least nine people, including three children, were killed when an apartment building collapsed in central Kazakhstan late Sunday.
Six people, including two children, were rescued from under the rubble of the building located in Shahan town of Karaganda region, according to the Kazakh emergencies committee.
The death toll may rise as a search and rescue operation is under way, the committee said. The remaining residents of the building have been evacuated.
The collapse was caused by an explosion of the heating system, Karaganda Governor Nurmukhambet Abdibekov said, adding that authorities have set up a committee to probe the accident and will provide financial assistance to families of the dead. (PNA/Xinhua)
