:o Are these people serious??? There goes our upper hand in the world job market. I say if they want to have more Tagalog in the class room, then they should have more Tagalog in the class room, not take English away all together. Freekin' idiots.

I strongly believe so. It's our edge over other asian countries and my sweetie even believe that i speak better english than him coming from England. I got hired in Bangkok for my good command of the english language. Thanks to my teachers back then. Had they used our native tongue, it could have been a lot harder to compete for work esp. abroad. It's silly teaching entirely in Tagalog. It's hard to translate technical stuff and some words are better left in english than translating them. Besides, where's globalization????

It's no-brainer!  English is a language understood by most people in the world.  Let's forget about America or England since that's their medium of communication but let's just say we go to Africa or Hungary.  I think we would have almost nil chance of communicating to locals in those places if we don't speak English.  These places may not we English-speaking but for sure they know one, two, three as opposed to isa, dalawa, tatlo!   As what Mari said, it's our edge...

We're unbeatable when it comes to the way we speak English that is the very reason why the United States alone has 1.5 million call-center "seats" to outsource directly to various call center hubs in our country.

Countries in Asia and Latin America are spending billions of dollars every year to hire English-speaking lecturers from other countries to teach English in their schools so that their citizens could face the demand of globalization. But our dear Philippines, thanks to the brilliant people in Manila, wants Tagalog to be the medium of instruction in schools nationwide.

88 % of the content of the Internet is written in English. Tagalog? I don't know.

More than 50 million Filipinos speak Bisaya. If that is the case, let Bisaya be the medium of instruction, but we Bisayans never think of such ridiculous suggestion.

English is lingua franca!  This has given us an economical advantage when going abroad. The idea that Tagalog be pursued as main language came from University of the Philippines´ philologists who were able to translate scientific books to tagalog to prove that this is possible.

This thread is quite funny.

Although there are some universities which have started to develop Science and Mathematics textbooks (I heard Ateneo has developed one), it has to be understood that English has deeply rooted in Philippine education system that changing the medium of instruction from English to Filipino is a great education reform which would need an "excessive amount of money". There's so many issues facing the quality of our educatiion today which needs to be addressed.

Why did I say that it needs excessive amount of money? Here are the reasons:
1. We have to invest for the development of new textbooks (in Filipino language) which is more expensive than just revising the widely used textbooks in English.
2. We need to train Science and Mathematics teachers per se for them to adopt the changes that this new medium of instruction might bring. (Remember that teachers are trained in colleges and universities in English)
3. If the government is aware, researches have to conducted first in order for this policy to be implemented successfully. There should be pilot schools to measure the feasibility of the project/reform.

If something needs to be changed, it should be something which is not working or something which is causing a problem. English isn't causing problems in our government and it even helps us in sustaining our economy. WHY NOT CHANGE THOSE IRRESPONSIBLE EMPLOYEES IN THE DEPED, INSTEAD? hahahaha.....

If the reason of those "idiots" is that Filipinos start to lose their identity and values because of English then they are wrong. We are Filipinos even if we speak all the languages in the world. Give more attention on values integration in different academic disciplines because that is what we need and not eradicate something which has been so useful.
