The Open Academy for Philippine Agriculture (OPAPA) has recently received international recognition after winning in the 2010 Arab Gulf Program for Development (AGFUND).
The OPAPA was declared as the best project in the third category prize of the AGFUND international prize for pioneering human development.
The category is ‘dedicated to the role of governments’ ministries and public institutions in adoption of new innovations to enhance the application of information and communications technology(ICT) for the development of remote and rural communities’.
The AGFUND International Prize theme for 2010 is Development of Remote and Rural Communities Through Information Technology and Communication.
Along with three other projects from Egypt, Palestine, and Burkina Faso, OPAPA emerged triumphant among the other 24 nominated projects from different countries.
OPAPA was recognized for its genuine efforts in enhancing agricultural knowledge sharing among Philippine rice stakeholders through ICT.
The OPAPA’s entry highlighted its various ICT interventions that connect lowly rice farmers to reliable sources of information, and modalities which encourage collaborative learning among rice scientists, extension workers, farmers, and other concerned organizations.
Importantly, OPAPA has shared its insights on the use and significance of ICT in Philippine agriculture, and how this is able to help the country attain rice self-sufficiency.
As third category winner, OPAPA received US$ 100, 000.
AGFUND is a regional developmental funding organization based in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. It actively works in the field of development at the international level and has helped in supporting 1, 268 projects in 133 developing countries. (PNA)
