The Department of Education (DepEd) on Monday said classes in all public elementary and secondary schools nationwide will be suspended to give teachers who serve as members of the Board of Elections Tellers (BET) time to rest.

Education Secretary Armin Luistro made the announcement in a press briefing Monday afternoon where he also disclosed that a teacher and BET member died in a traffic accident in Ilocos Norte while on their way to get election materials assigned to her.

“In consideration of the efforts our teachers exerted during the conduct of the 2010 Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan election, particularly their having to wait for the election materials practically over night, DepEd declares that classes in all public elementary and high schools nationwide are suspended tomorrow Tuesday, October 26," LUistro said.

At the same time, the DepEd chief said “for schools where elections are postponed to October 26, classes are suspended tomorrow and the following day October 27.”

“This suspension is made to give our courageous, dedicated and persevering teachers time to rest after a long poll duty,” Luistro said.

About 490,000 teachers are currently serving as BET members, upped from the 229,000 that do poll duties in the May 10 presidential elections.

About 1,732 barangays (villages) have suspended the holding of election to October 26 to the late arrival of ballots and other election paraphernalia and security concerns.

Due to the delay, the DepEd said its Election Task Force and Operations Center will extend its operations until 10 p.m. of October 26. It was originally set to end its monitoring at 12 noon Tuesday.
