A jampacked crowd watches the final game between Central Visayas and NCR at the Lamberto Macias Sports and Cultural Center in Dumaguete City. Central Visayas defeated NCR, 70-66, to bag the gold in boys basketball secondary division. JUN MENDOZADUMAGUETE CITY, Philippines – National Capital Region retained its superpower status for the 10th straight time, capping its supremacy with commanding wins in women’s basketball and volleyball at the close of Palarong Pambansa yesterday at the Gov. Mariano Perdices Sports Complex.
Represented by Hope Christian School, the NCR lady spikers overpowered a listless Central Visayas in a surprisingly one-sided 25-12, 25-7, 25-1 victory to cop the volleyball gold before their lady dribblers routed Calabarzon, 65-52, to snare the basketball mint in both the girls’ side.
The pair of triumphs gave a crowning touch to a fine achievement by the Big City bets who annexed their 10th general championship starting in 2003. The annual multi-sports meet was cancelled outright in 2004 due to the national elections back then.
NCR’s volleyball and basketball victories more than made up for painful defeats in other ballgames, the most embarrassing of which came in the sport that mattered most – boys basketball.
Playing before a predominantly Visayan crowd at the jampacked Lamberto Macias Sports and Cultural Centre, NCR, represented by San Sebastian, struggled early, mounted a spirited comeback before falling short in the end and losing to a hardened, more determined Central Visayas, 70-66.
