2 More Years for Philippine High School?
« on: December 26, 2008, 08:57:16 AM »
Education Secretary Jesli Lapus said on Wednesday that the government will have to spend some P30 billion with the proposals to add two more years to the current 10-year basic education curriculum in the country.

“That amount, which is the conservative estimate, especially if we take into consideration the growing number of students, both in the elementary and secondary level every year, will be on top of the regular budgetary allocation given to the Department of Education (DepEd),” Lapus said.

He added that adding two years to the basic education curriculum would mean four million additional students in the elementary and secondary level.

“The amount would go to the construction of additional classrooms, textbooks, teachers manuals and other facilities as well as the additional salaries and bonuses of our teachers,” he said.

At present, DepEd has a P142 billion budget while next year it was allocated P167.9 billion with about 85 percent of the said amount to be spent on salaries and bonuses of some 522,885 teachers and non-teaching staff of DepEd.

Lapus also disclosed that the proposals discussed and evaluated by the Presidential Task Force on Education (PTFD) includes adding two years after secondary level or what he called the “pre-university level.” - PNA
