WITH food items and medicine expected to be in demand, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is warning the public against consuming those that have been soaked in flood water.

According to FDA, consuming such products may pose serious health problems to the public, especially those in evacuation centers, where the demand is expected to be highest.

"All consumers are warned to never buy flood water-damaged food products, including canned goods, and medicines," said FDA.

It stressed that being offered through discounted goods or offered in promotional schemes such as "buy one, take one" or "bundle-packed goods" are not enough reason to purchase them.

The health agency also warned that food items and medicines soaked in flood water may have been contaminated by animal and human feces and other excrement, mainly from overflowing septic tanks and sewage system, as well as heavy metals, fuel and other chemicals and pesticides from nearby industrial factories, hospitals or clinic, or farms.

"It only takes a small amount of microbial pathogens to make people sick. Infection can be through ingestion of contaminated food and water," said FDA.

Instead of consuming them, FDA said flood-soaked food items and medicines should be immediately disposed.

On the other hand, FDA told groceries or supermarkets and drug outlets that it is prohibited to offer food items and drugs that have been soaked in flood water.

"All establishments are prohibited from selling, offering for sale or use, donating, transporting, and moving or distributing flood water-damaged canned goods and other processed food products, medicines, and cosmetic products," said FDA.

Since Sunday, Metro Manila as well as other provinces of Luzon has been pummeled by heavy rains brought by tropical storm Maring-strengthened Southwest Monsoon resulting to massive flooding with some going up to chest-deep. (HDT/Sunnex)
