Muaythai, cheerleading get IOC provisional recognition

MANILA, Dec. 7 (PNA) -- The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has granted provisional recognition for a period of three years to the international federations of muay thai and cheerleading during the IOC Executive Board Meeting held on Tuesday (Wednesday in Manila) at the Lausanne Palace Hotel in Switzerland.
The International Federation of Muaythai Amateur (IFMA) and the International Cheer Union (ICU) were among the 16 International Federations which applied.
The IFMA and ICU will be eligible to get IOC development programme funding.
Ski mountaineering received full recognition in the IOC meeting held during the 2016 Rio Olympics while the flying disc was included in Malaysia last year.
Meanwhile, the IOC Executive Board also gave its nod to the inclusion of dance sport, karate and sport climbing to the calendar of the 2018 Youth Olympic Games (YOG) in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
The Summer Youth Olympic Games now has 31 sports.
Dance sport will have the men’s, women’s and mixed team breakdancing events; karate will feature three kumite events in the boys and girls divisions while sport climbing will have three disciplines namely lead, bouldering and speed for both men and women. (PNA)
