Guerrillero Heroico (English: "Heroic Guerrilla Fighter") is an iconic photo of Marxist revolutionary Che Guevara wearing his black beret taken by Alberto Korda. It was taken on March 5, 1960, in Havana, Cuba, at a memorial service for victims of the La Coubre explosion and by the end of the 1960s turned the charismatic and controversial leader into a cultural icon.

Guerrillero Heroico - Alberto Korda's famous photograph of Che Guevara

The popularized cropped (and slightly rotated) version - by snipping out a palm tree and the profile of another man, Korda gave the portrait "an ageless quality, divorced from the specifics of time and place."

Korda has said that at the moment he shot the picture, he was drawn to Guevara's facial expression, which showed "absolute implacability" as well as anger and pain. Years later, Korda would say that the photo showed Che's firm and stoic character. Guevara was 31 at the time the photo was taken.

“Nearing 30, I was heading toward a frivolous life when an exceptional event transformed my life: The Cuban Revolution. It was at this time that I took this photo of a little girl, who was clutching a piece of wood for a doll. I came to understand that it was worth dedicating my work to a revolution which aimed to remove these inequalities.”
-Alberto Díaz Gutiérrez, better known as Alberto Korda or simply Korda (September 14, 1928 in Havana, Cuba – May 25, 2001 in Paris, France)

He got caught up in the ideals of the revolution and began photographing its leaders. (wikipedia)
