The former pitcher Omar Carrero Moreno, considered a legend of the Cuban baseball, passed away at 62 years old in his native homeland, Florence town, central province of Ciego de Avila, local media said Thursday.

The daily Granma said that Carrero died due to an intense digestive bleeding derived from a hepatic disease, adding "all the baseball fans in the country are mourning for Carrero."

The National Information Agency said that hundreds of baseball lovers on Thursday attended Carrero Moreno's funeral in Ciego de Avila. They praised his life of devotion for the game of the balls and the strikes.

Moreno, born on May 13, 1949, participated in 17 seasons, with a balance of 149 triumphs and 105 misfortunes, and a historical average of 2.27 clean runs for every nine innings.

The formidable right-handed pitcher, known as "The Farmer of Florence" (El Guajiro de Florencia), is also remembered for winning a zero hit-cero run game against the Tunas team on January, 27, 1981, and for winning the national champion with the team of "Cattle dealers" (Ganaderos) in 1976.

He won the world-wide crowns in Colombia in 1976, Italy in 1978, and Holland in 1986, as well as the titles of the Pan-American Games in Mexico in 1975, and the Central Americans and the Caribbean in the Dominican Republic in 1986.
