Edin Dzeko's second goal of the tournament secured Manuel Pellegrini's first title as Manchester City defeated Sunderland 1-0 in the final of 2013 Barclays Asia Trophy here on Saturday.
Dzeko, whose semifinal goal against local club South China proved to be the winner, claimed the only goal of today's final after nine minutes. Yaya Toure's scooped pass was cleared by Wes Brown only as far as Dzeko unleashed a ferocious left-footed volley that flew past Vito Mannone and in off a post.
Sunderland made a lucky escape in the second half after Fernandinho's flick was handled in the box by El-Hadji Ba, but Dzeko blazed the resulting penalty over the bar.
Navas also lost the chance to guarantee the victory when his shot, despite beating goalkeeper Keiren Westwood, was cleared off the line from beneath his own crossbar by Craig Garnder.
The victory gave Pellegrini his first trophy as Manchester City manager, but victory was soured as the Chilean witnessed Matija Nastasic being taken off on a stretcher during the second half.
