Six karatedo players from Davao City will be seeing action in the 4th SMA Cup set on March 3 to 8 at the Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) Indoor Sport Center in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia then proceed to Singapore to compete in the 2nd Silent Knight Karate-do Open Championships on March 10 to 14.
Association for the Advancement of Karatedo (AAK) Davao Branch head instructor and coach Rommel Tan said the players, who are all members of AKK Davao, will be joining the Philippine delegation together with the karatekas from AAK-Honbo Dojo of SM Megamall under Anthony Lim, a former RP team member, SEA Games champion and Asian Games medalist and now a licensed WKF world referee-judge.
Tan said the players are composed of Kassandra Danielle Barnes, Oona Ysabelle Barnes and Manuel Sy of the Davao Christian High School; Arthur Lao III of the Holy Cross of Davao College, Christian Gil Tarnate of Precious Interational and Herma Panal of AAK-Honbu Dojo (kumite).
The players will all compete in the age-group category except for Panal, who will be play in the senior's division, he said.
"Priority pa rin namin ang pag-aaral ng mga bata sa kanilang academics (Our priority is still the studies of the children in their academics)," said Tan, who will also be joining the World Karatedo Federation (WKF) Technical Seminar for Judges/Referees in Malaysia.
After Malaysia, the group will proceed to Singapore to compete in the 2nd Silent Knight Karatedo Open Championships on March 10 to 14, Tan said.
Tan, however, said their team still needs sponsors for their trip.
"We are still looking for sponsors and we hope that we can get it," he said.
The AAK Davao team which is supported by the athletes' parents, the TKS Petron under Engr. Mike and Esther Te and the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) for their travel tax exemption, is now in rigid and regular training here, he added. (PNA)
