The Cebu City Sports Commission (CCSC) has intensified its barangay dancesports program with a series of workshops, which started last Saturday.

The workshop, which is part of the scholarship program by the Dancesport Team Cebu City and supported by the Philippine Sports Commission, went full blast at seven public elementary schools in the city and will continue until the end of the month.

CCSC chairman Edward Hayco, who is also the city’s patron for dancesports, said the venues for the workshops are the elementary schools in Guadalupe, Tisa, Basak, Pardo, Apas, Tejero and Sawang Calero.

”At least, it will sway and encourage other sports disciplines to follow and implement their own free training program. We need to create awareness. Other sports leaders should start to walk their talk,” Hayco said.

The Team Cebu City Dancesports bagged 11 gold medals, 13 silvers and four bronze medals in the 16th National DanceSport Championship 2012 at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium last Oct. 13 and 14.

Hayco is very upbeat about the free workshops in the barangays, which has produced quality athletes, one of those was Jessa Mae Briones from Bulacao who had made waves in the empire State Dancesports competition in New York last year.

”What is important here is that dancesports lesson costs each athlete at least P300 in a private dance studio for one session. Here, we give it for free,” Hayco added.
