by Bohol Standard

The people of Tagbilaran City flocked to Eastern Cogon Elementary School on April 22, 2012 to avail of the various services offered by the 35 year old first City Councilor John Geesnell “Baba” Yap through his namesake project dubbed as “B.A.B.A.” or “Building an Active Barangay Advocacy”. The mission was able to serve over 2 thousand Tagbilaran residents.

Councilor John Geesnell Baba Yap disclosed that the B.A.B.A project is a realization of the kind of government service he envisions for the City of Tagbilaran. “Public service must be experienced directly by the people. To make it even more meaningful, it entails public-private collaborations, community cooperation and grassroots involvement. This is the reason for my advocacy towards empowering the Tagbilaranons in the barangays', Yap explains.

During the event, Tagbilaran residents availed of free medical, dental and eye care services with free eye glasses; free legal counseling and notarial services; and veterinary care through free dog vaccination.

The medical services included free general check-up and treatment, dental check-up and tooth extraction, blood pressure monitoring, blood sugar testing, and eye check-up. Also, a Mother and Child Care service was offered that consisted of a Seminar on Healthy Pregnancy and the distribution of free vitamins for pregnant women. Basic medicines for children were also given out. On the other hand, young boys were initiated to manhood with the Libreng Tuli conducted on site.

Along with the medical consultation given by 40 different doctors coming from Manila, Cebu and Bohol, they were also able to distribute free medicines upon the prescription given by doctors.

An array of special services were made available to the public such as free haircut, free manicure and pedicure, free cellphone repair, libre tawag , free massage and free motor check-up. A make up workshop was also conducted for livelihood purposes.

Aside from enjoying the different unlimited free services, Tagbilaranons who attended the gathering were entertained with fun activities such as the Cogon Got Talent contest hosted by Inday Rufing and the raffle draw, Oras-oras Barangay Pabuenas.

The Councilor was overjoyed with the huge turn out of people and thanked the support of the following project partners: JCI Bohol Sandugo headed by Atty. Brian Gaviola, JCI Mandaue, JCI Womandaue, Alpha Phi Omega Bohol headed by LJ Lumayag, Alpha Phi Omega Foundation Manila, Dra. Estrella Lim from the Philippine Red Cross, J. Flores Dental Clinic, Bagnol-Salera Dental Clinic, De La Serna Dental Clinic, Suarez Optical Clinic, the Provincial Government of Bohol under Gov. Edgar M. Chatto with the assistance of Provincial Administrator Alfonso “Ae” Damalerio and the Tarsier 117, Dr. Jeia Pondoc and company, Lieutenant Colonel Romeo Brawner Jr., Commander of the 2nd Special Forces Battalion of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) together with their 15 Army medics and the Bohol Motorist Club.

Yap was also grateful for the help extended by the Eastern Cogon Elementary School headed Mrs. Conching Tubal, Eastern Cogon FPTA President Grace Melgar and Cogon Brgy. Kagawad Jerry Pabe.

He likewise thanked City Councilor Betty Torralba, Brgy Capt. Faro Cabalit and Capitol Executive Asst. Anthony Damalerio for their personal attendance and valuable assistance.

The City's top councilor is beginning to carve his own niche in public service with his unique brand of leadership that is pro-people and service oriented. Yap is focused on delivering government services straight to the grassroots level in the barangays. Thus, more BABA free service caravans are expected to roll out in the coming months.

John 3:16-18 ESV
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son (Jesus Christ), that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.
