Incoming CBCP chief frowns on long, boring homilies

Saying that churchgoers have a "serious" problem with "long, winding and dry homilies," Lingayen-Dagupan Archbishop Socrates Villegas on Friday discouraged priests from delivering boring liturgies.

“Our youth complain about lifeless and uninspiring liturgies. How can we set their hearts on fire if we ourselves are not afire for God? We must prepare our homilies,” the incoming president of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) said in a statement Friday night.

He also urged priests to stop being "swivel-chair pastors" and instead "(go) out to the barangays and public schools, visit the charity wards of hospitals, teach catechism again, visit homes again—make a ‘mess’ in society.”

Villegas said priests cannot merely stay in churches and become “pastors of status quo” while people are waiting for the Gospel. “This cannot continue. We cannot be swivel chair pastors," he said.

He lamented that many priests have become content in just “maintaining” the Church, which supposedly has on occasion failed to evangelize effectively and impose morality.

Villegas said the problem is not a shortage of priests but of "zeal."

“The problem is not priest shortage but zeal shortage. We brother priests have failed to inspire our people to imitate Christ. We have failed to lead them to intimacy with him,” he said.

Villegas also said teaching Christian doctrines are not enough if priests failed to connect them to life.

“We have taught the Christian doctrines but we have failed to connect them to life. We know the faith but we do not live it,” he said.

“Our transmission of the faith must inspire our people to imitate Christ,” he added. — KBK, GMA News

I'd rather have a long homily than a very dull and short one ! ;D
